I believe the auto headlights are also only on the 2009-2010 Corolla's in the U.S. models but I'm not too sure about the DRL.

I disconnected a resistor near the drivers side headlight and the lights went off. I'm not sure what the resistor is for (perhaps the Daytime Running Lights - DRL).

It could be a mechanical thing in the ignition switch or it could be the key itself completes a circuit that triggers the action in the bcm.

If your lights are not coming on when you believe they did in the past, I would suspect there is an issue withe the headlight sensor (the day/night sensor that tells the headlights when to turn on).
